The high loads including tension forces meant that piles were required. Due to the presence of residential developments and offices in the area, CFA (continuous flight auger) piles were preferred as for this installation method the noise and vibration are significantly reduced compared to other methods.

Ground Conditions

The upper 7.0m was found to be fill underlain by a stiff London clay layer to 19m and a very stiff layer of Reading Formation Clay down to 25m.

Solution

The proposed solution was to adopt a design for the piles using Eurocodes design allowing for load tests on both preliminary and working piles. 300mm and 350mm diameter continuous flight auger (CFA) piles were installed down to 23m depth.

Concrete used was C28/35 DC-3 and the reinforcement for the piles is 4H16x8m in a H8 helical with 150mm pitch for 300mm piles and a pitch of 200mm for the 350mm piles. For the piles with tension loads, a central bar was added 1H32x16.
